Our current exhibition at St. Julian's Palacio

I wish to share with you a few pages from our school magazine with examples of work from year 6 to year 9, which are now on display in our gallery in the Palacio. These pages were published on the Lighthouse magazine two weeks ago.

Miguel Branco visits St. Julian's

Yesterday morning Miguel came to visit the Art department and brought with him a few of his works to show our lucky y12's. I have to say I am impressed with how all the students took this opportunity to learn about Miguel, to question him with pertinent questions and to reflect on their own practice. They have been experimenting with paints and I leave you a few transcriptions of Miguel Branco's works. Thank you Miguel!

Many many vanishing points

Before we created the pop up landscapes with our year 6 students, we worked on the background  image. We looked at Dutch landscape painting from the 17th century and observed the broad variety of colours that are present in the well known stormy skies that are so typical of dutch landscape painting. Our students worked solely with primary colours and white. They used block paints and learned how to mix colours to create a great variety of tones and shades (see previous post on pop ups, y6). Students also learned how to use a vanishing point to create the illusion of vast distances in the landscapes.
We felt that their work was beautiful and worth leaving intact, so we photocopied the original paintings and used the copies to produce the pop up cards. Below is an image of some of their landscapes.

Triangles

On my previous post I showed you this sculpture by Tomás Candeias:

 

 

I mentioned how plaster was used to make it but now I wish to talk about the form. Tomás was trying to reduce all his work into basic, geometric forms. He explored the triangle in a variety of ways. See below:

What about painting...

Ok, so I haven't posted any painting yet since my comeback. So I thought I should start with Rosa Mulloy. I will post other works from our finalist students, but it seems a good idea to do so in stages. Today its Rosa!
